When a news event occurs that warrants the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), a network will alert all affiliated stations to stand by and switch to its national feed. A countdown sequence is typically displayed on-screen and an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue is then shown. Then, the news anchor will be introduced. Prior to the introduction of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent situations, such as a presidential assassination or an ongoing disaster like a severe hurricane. During these reports, the lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey the urgency of the situation. Also known as a newsflash or special report.
