In television and radio, breaking news is an announcement of a news event that requires immediate coverage. This usually interrupts non-news programming, a process known as a “cut-in”. The network usually alerts its affiliates and pauses the feed to allow them to switch to the break-in. A distinctive music cue may then begin, and an announcer will introduce the story at hand. The broadcaster may also incorporate analysis about the breaking news story through analysts in-studio, via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or other means. During the era of 24-hour news networks, the term is often used to refer to an entire broadcast dedicated to breaking news events that warrant a complete interruption of regular programming. In this context, it is common for the network to include lower thirds and other graphics that convey a sense of urgency in order to make the audience aware that they are interrupting regular programming.
