Newsflash and special report are the terms used to describe an urgent breaking story that requires a pause in current non-news programming or, in the case of network television, a halt to the regularly scheduled newscast. Usually, the newscast will begin with a countdown sequence (similar to a telefilm promo or lower third) to allow time for network affiliates to switch over to the network feed, followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Depending on the importance of the event, the report may last for only a few minutes or continue for hours or days. Historically, such breaks were reserved for events of national significance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which necessitated a nationwide interruption of programming. More recently, many networks have begun using “breaking news” tickers during regularly scheduled programs, which reduces the need for cut-ins.
