Breaking news is a type of television or radio broadcast that requires the interrupting of regular programming to provide live, urgent coverage of an event of national or international importance. It is usually accompanied by a breaking news graphic and a special, distinctive music cue that distinguishes it from standard station imaging promos or program reminders (known as lower thirds). In the past, this was often referred to as a Newsflash or a Special Report; however, in recent years, 24-hour network news channels have begun using “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
