Breaking News

A breaking news event is a significant current news story that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming on a television or radio station (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). The network usually alerts its affiliated stations to interrupt their own coverage and switch to the network feed, which will usually include a countdown sequence. This is typically followed by a special report or newsflash graphic and distinctive music cue, sometimes with a lower third that reads “Special Report”.

Before 24-hour news networks became common, breaking news events often required the use of cut-ins during regular programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Today, most stations have live anchors on standby for breaking stories and can shift to a special report in seconds, eliminating the need for cut-ins.
