When an event occurs that warrants immediate, urgent news coverage, some radio and television stations interrupt regular programming to broadcast a breaking news story. This is typically done by running a special newsflash or alert crawl, but it can also be accomplished through the use of an in-studio anchor or other newscaster who introduces the story with live audio or video. In addition, network affiliates may run a “Special Report” ticker for select breaking stories during their regular programs, which eliminates the need for a cut-in.
