Trending topics can range from popular culture, to politics and current events. This segment is often shown during breaking news, but can also be found on regular programming. Trending is usually presented by one of the news anchors or a special guest host.

Breaking news is normally announced by a graphic and a distinctive music cue. Networks may also use a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed and announce the breaking news.
