A breaking news story is an event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires stations to interrupt regular programming (or in some cases, their network feed). Before 24-hour news networks existed, these interruptions were typically reserved for highly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and were typically signaled through a newsflash or special report graphic. A countdown sequence is usually used, to allow network affiliates to join the break. Depending on the story, the break may last only a few minutes or may continue for hours or even days. During the breaks, lower thirds and other graphics are frequently altered to convey urgency.
