Trending is a special segment on Current News that covers topics that are currently being talked about, or have been recently discussed in the media. It is often presented as a series of short video clips or graphic images with accompanying text. This segment is often used to break news stories that would normally interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (or even some regular network newscasts, if the breaking story is especially large and widespread). Depending on the severity of the event, stations may insert their own station identification at the top of the hour overlaid onto the Trending segment. This type of breaking news segment is also known as a newsflash or a special report.
Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were only used for the most urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or severe weather warnings such as tornadoes. Today, breaking news is a common occurrence on television and radio, particularly during live programs such as the network newscasts.
