A breaking news report is a short news item on current events that may require an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of a national network newscast, the entire broadcast. It is often presented in a distinct graphic, usually with its own music cue. In the United States, this type of reporting is also known as a newsflash or special report (see below). Breaking news reports are normally used only for major world events such as terrorist attacks, natural disasters, or other major national happenings that elicit nationwide coverage and demand prompt interruptions of other stations.
