Breaking news is a breaking-news event that warrants the interruption of regular, non-news programming on television or radio. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of breaking news was typically limited to highly urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to interrupt their broadcasts simultaneously.
When a major news event occurs, a national network will typically issue a “Newsflash” or “Special report” alert, which prompts all of its affiliates to interrupt their own local broadcasts and switch to the network feed for live coverage.
