When a story becomes urgent enough to warrant the interruption of current non-news programming, or in some cases regular scheduled newscasts (especially during the pre-television era), it is called Breaking News. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of interrupt was generally reserved for major events that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to suspend their programming simultaneously to provide live coverage. Today, breaking news stories are often identified through the use of a newsflash or special report graphic. The resulting break may last only a few minutes, or be sustained for multiple hours, days, or even weeks.
