When a significant news event occurs that warrants immediate coverage and interrupts current or previously-scheduled non-news programming, the network will usually announce that it is “breaking news” with a distinctive graphic overlaid on the screen, and that affiliates should stand by to join the national feed. At some stations, this may be a simple matter of pausing the program or breaking away from a regular commercial break; at others, the station’s main studio will shut down and go live with the news report.

In the United States, until 24-hour news networks came on the scene in the 1990s, breaking news was almost exclusively limited to very serious events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or extremely urgent weather information such as tornado warnings and landfalling hurricanes that require all local and regional stations to cut in live, with their meteorologists. Today, many major stations run special “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled programs that lessen the need for cut-ins.
