Whenever current events elicit the need for immediate and extensive nationwide coverage, a network may interrupt its regular programming to provide “breaking news” reports. Usually, stations will use an opening graphic and distinctive music cue to signal the change. Depending on the story, such reports can last only a few minutes or span multiple hours and even days. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent matters, such as a president’s assassination or a severe weather event requiring extensive regional evacuations.
