Breaking news is live coverage of events that are so urgent or significant that they require an immediate interruption of regular programming (typically television, but sometimes radio and online) to report on them. A national network may issue a special signal telling all of its affiliates to stand by for breaking news, and the network feed will switch to a countdown sequence to allow stations that aren’t currently airing a breaking news report to join the live feed. If the news event is extremely significant, a special “newsflash” graphic is often used to identify the story. Similarly, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency.
