Breaking News
A breaking news story is one that requires immediate, nationwide coverage and interrupts regular non-news programming on radio and television. Historically, news events that warranted breaking news interruptions were extremely urgent, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or were a significant weather event such as a tornado warning. Today, most networks have an anchor on standby to interrupt regularly scheduled programming and may include lower thirds or alert crawls in the event of a major story. This is also common at 24-hour news channels. The term “breaking news” was originally used by CBS News for its special report of the assassination of Kennedy and is now used informally.
