Breaking news is a type of television or radio news program that provides information about a developing story that may be of particular importance to a large audience, such as an immediate threat to life and property. It can require an immediate interruption of regular programming, with the network notifying its affiliates and asking them to stand by for the breaking news, and often involves a graphic at the top of the screen and a special alert crawl during other programs, such as sports or talk shows.
It used to be common for network affiliates to interrupt their own local programming with breaking news, but this is less the case now that 24-hour news networks exist and have anchors ready for live interruption at any time.
