Current News covers the most talked about stories of the day. Whether it’s the ongoing war between Israel and Iran, the economic impact of a gas explosion in Jerusalem, or the latest accusation against the late labor leader Cesar Chavez, NPR correspondents are there to report and analyze what’s happening right now.
When a story breaks that requires an interruption of non-news programming, or even a pause in a national network’s regular newscast, an audio alert will sound across the country, and a countdown sequence will play, to allow affiliates to switch over to the breaking news feed. An NPR anchor will then introduce the story at hand and present it to viewers.
Before 24-hour news networks, interruptive news coverage was only used for the most urgent events that required stations nationwide to halt regular programming, such as an assassination or a severe weather event. Now, stations use special graphic cut-ins or tickers during regularly scheduled programming to highlight certain breaking stories, reducing the need for the more dramatic cut-ins that were once common.
