When a significant event occurs that warrants immediate, nationwide coverage, the national network may interrupt its regular programming to provide breaking news coverage and a countdown sequence for affiliate stations to switch over. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics on a station may be changed to indicate a breaking story. The concept of breaking news first came to prominence in the United States when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, requiring many radio and television stations to cut into regular non-news programs and use special tickers.
