Newsflash and special report are terms used in television and radio to signal the beginning of a news-related story that requires interrupting regular non-news programming, or, in the case of a national network’s regular newscast, stopping it temporarily to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed. The interruption may be accompanied by a distinctive news-related opening graphic and an audio cue. Often lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey a sense of urgency. Such breaks were rare before 24-hour news networks became popular, and were usually restricted to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and severe weather events.
