Trending is a segment on Current News that talks about topics that are currently generating the most interest on social media. The program may also include analysis on the topic by CNN experts in-studio or via phone, satellite or broadband (B-GAN). The segment is often introduced with an animated graphic and distinctive music cue. Depending on the severity of the story, regular programming may be interrupted to continue breaking news coverage. If a national network newscast is in progress at the time, the network will usually ask affiliate stations to stand by and then begin a countdown sequence, allowing them to switch to the network feed when it becomes available. This technique is called a “newsflash” or a “special report”.
