When a news event occurs that warrants an interruption in regular programming, it is referred to as Breaking News. It’s a term that originated in the days before 24-hour news networks, when major events like the assassination of John F. Kennedy would elicit nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to stop their normal programming and interrupt each other for the sole purpose of reporting the breaking news. Often, the network will use a special graphic with a distinctive music cue to signal that the break is happening and to ask its affiliates to stand by for the national news feed. In more recent times, some networks have begun using a Special Report ticker during regularly scheduled newscasts to alert viewers of breaking stories, lessening the need for cut-ins.
