Trending is a daily news program that looks at what’s making headlines in the world. This week, we look at whether a new Fed chairman will bring more stability to the economy, why Kouri Richins was convicted of spiking her husband’s drink with fentanyl and how Iran is using drones that cost a fraction of missiles to level the playing field in its war with the United States.
Breaking News
When a major story breaks that warrants an interruption in regular programming, networks often use a newsflash or special report to alert viewers and affiliate stations to the event. Depending on the nature of the breaking news, this may involve an overlaid graphic and/or music cues, a countdown sequence or simply a news anchor interrupting live to begin coverage. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were only a part of network newscasts during certain emergencies such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide interrupts of non-news programs.
