About Trending
Breaking News is a type of news report that interrupts regular non-news programming on television and radio. When an event occurs that warrants immediate coverage, network and local affiliate stations typically pause their current non-news broadcast, announcing the change in programing with a newsflash graphic or alert crawl. If an occurrence is large enough, the network may require affiliates to interrupt their current newscast with a live breaking news report. This is similar to the way stations used to interrupt their broadcasts when severe weather events occurred, but these interruptions were rare before the advent of 24-hour news networks.
