When a news event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of network television newscasts, regular commercial advertising, the station’s national feed will usually stop for an exclusive “breaking news” report. The network will alert its affiliates and typically display a countdown sequence to allow them to switch over to the newscast. The break is normally accompanied by a graphic identifying the network and story, along with a distinctive music cue. Often, the story is followed by several hours or days of continued coverage and analysis of the event. Other terms for breaking news include Newsflash and Special Report.
