Before 24-hour news networks existed, programming interruptions were limited to the most urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required multiple stations to break into their regular schedules. Now, with the advent of dedicated news channels, many broadcasters use special graphics that replace lower thirds or alert crawls during regular programming when breaking news occurs.
