Breaking News

A breaking news story is a news event that is so urgent, immediate or significant that it warrants the interruption of ongoing non-news programming on television and radio stations, or regularly scheduled newscasts (in some cases). A network usually alerts its affiliates to the event through a countdown sequence and a special graphic, and then interrupts the regular broadcast to cover the breaking news. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were typically reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes, when the need to interrupt regular programs prompted newsflash graphics or crawls to be displayed on-screen.
