Trending is a news program that talks about topics currently being followed and discussed on social media. Oftentimes, Trending will include a short segment on a breaking news story as well. Breaking news is a term used for a news event that is so urgent that it requires the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, the pause of that broadcast). This was typically reserved for severe weather events or other newsworthy occurrences that prompted widespread coverage and requiring numerous stations to interrupt their regular programs to deliver the story in question. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was generally limited to the assassination of a U.S. president or other events of national significance that warranted nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their programming.
