Breaking news (also known as Breaking News, BreakingNews, or Newsflash) is a segment of a television or radio broadcast in which breaking news events are covered in-depth and in real-time. In a traditional television broadcast, this is usually done through a “special report” or a cut-in from another program. In the case of 24-hour news networks, it may be done through a live feed from the network’s anchor station. In some cases, the news event is so urgent that it requires national network affiliates to interrupt their regular programming to cover it. This may require the network to alert their affiliates to the event and give them a countdown sequence for the interruption.
