When a breaking news event occurs that requires the interruption of regular non-news broadcasts (or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts), networks will usually alert affiliates to stand by and then pause their own feeds to allow stations to switch over to a special break. The break will begin with a graphic and a distinctive music cue that tells viewers to “stand by for breaking news”. In some cases, the network will continue to carry its own coverage of the event even after it has finished interrupting regular programming; this is known as a special report or newsflash.
