Breaking news is news that is so important or timely that it requires a television station to interrupt normal programming (or even pause their regularly scheduled newscast). The term “breaking news” was originally used to refer to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted multiple stations to interrupt regular programming to broadcast live coverage of the event. This type of reporting is also referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report.
