Trending is a term used to describe the top stories discussed on NPR and in other media outlets. These stories are often featured on a special news ticker or on a separate section of the website, which may be labeled “Breaking News” or a variation such as “Newsflash,” “Special report,” or “The Breaking News.” Trending may also refer to the fact that these stories appear at the top of search results on news websites. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking news was typically interrupted from regular programming only in extreme circumstances such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or a natural disaster that was unfolding quickly and required immediate coverage. During such breaks, a network feed is aired to affiliate stations that can interrupt their own programming and insert their station identification in the countdown sequence prior to the breaking news segment.
