When a breaking news event occurs that requires the interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, a network newscast), it is often announced by a countdown sequence on the national network feed and an on-air alert to affiliates to interrupt their own broadcasts. A newsflash or special report graphic is then displayed, usually with a distinctive music cue, followed by a live news anchor to introduce the story at hand. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have largely eliminated the use of cut-ins in favor of their own dedicated breaking news reports that can be interrupted at any time, including during regularly scheduled programs.
