Breaking news is an announcement of urgent, time-sensitive information or a serious developing story that requires immediate attention by the audience and warrants interruptions to regular non-news programming, such as a live newscast or radio broadcast. Prior to the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, breaking news events that required program interruptions were generally reserved for severe weather incidents or a major event such as the assassination of a national leader. When an urgent breaking story occurs, a news anchor or studio host often appears on the screen with a graphic that says “Breaking News” or “Newsflash.” Often lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey urgency.
