Trending is a term used by broadcasters to talk about stories that are currently breaking news. Often, when a story breaks, it interrupts current non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, pauses the feed to allow station affiliates to switch to the news feed. The interruption is typically accompanied by a distinctive newsflash or special report graphics, with a dramatic music cue to convey urgency. The breaking story may be followed by an anchor or, if the event is particularly severe, the station will simply provide alert crawls throughout regular programming. This was common practice before the advent of 24-hour news networks and is still commonly used during major national events such as hurricanes or tornado warnings.
