Breaking news is an urgent or developing story that a television or radio broadcast network feels warrants the interruption of currently non-news or regularly scheduled programming, to cover it. When such an event occurs, the network usually alerts its affiliates to “stand by,” and the program pauses for any affiliated stations to switch over to the national feed before a breaking news graphic is displayed with a distinctive music cue (or newsflash). Breaking news was once rare on broadcast television before 24-hour news networks were introduced; it is now common for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy to elicit nationwide coverage that requires many stations to interrupt other programming.
