Breaking news is a television or radio program covering a breaking story, or an event that warrants an interruption of other non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour network newscast, a live interrupt). When a breaking story occurs that needs to be immediately covered, a station will normally send out a newsflash, special report, or alert crawl to its affiliates telling them to prepare for a break in regular programming, and may also change lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency.
