When a news story breaks, interrupts regular non-news programming on television and radio or, in the case of national network newscasts, pauses an ongoing program to cover it, a broadcaster will typically alert its affiliate stations and direct them to switch to a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” feed. The news coverage, often accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a distinctive graphic, may last only a few minutes, or, in the case of breaking stories requiring widespread coverage such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, may be interrupted for hours or days of continued coverage.
