Streaming news has emerged as an innovative new means of getting news on the go. It allows viewers to customize their experience. They can choose which topics to watch, block specific topics, and express their opinions.

The major networks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing their streaming operations. In addition to documentaries and live events, they offer regular nightly news programs, analysis, and reruns.

Unlike cable TV, which is linear, streaming gives viewers the freedom to change the channel and see the latest news, anywhere. News networks are betting that their audiences are nimble enough to adjust their schedules.

For instance, CBS plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. Similarly, NBC News Now offers 10 hours of programming a day. These are just a few examples of how streaming is enabling the major networks to attract niche audiences.

Historically, broadcast news has been a lucrative business. However, consumers have become frustrated with low-quality, high-cost products. This frustration created kindling for innovators.

Online video streaming is likely to reshape the way news is reported. It also will remove limitations placed on television companies by limited licenses. That could lead to new overtly political news operations.

Streaming has proven its worth in attracting mass audiences. Some of these services are free. Others charge subscribers a small fee. Ultimately, they’re trying to convince people to cut their cable subscriptions in order to get their news.

For example, POLITICO provides breaking news and national politics coverage. Meanwhile, SciTechDaily covers astrophysics, cosmology, and space.
