When a significant news event breaks that demands immediate attention, television and radio broadcasters interrupt current non-news programming. This is usually done through a special graphic with distinctive music cues (as well as the usual lower thirds) and a call for viewers to “stand by” and await further information on the breaking story. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were rare and usually limited to very urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required multiple stations to stop their regularly scheduled programs and provide live coverage. Other terms for such a break are newsflash, special report, and breaking news.
