A breaking news story is a current event that warrants an interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts), usually followed by a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the network’s feed. It is most often used to report urgent, time-sensitive stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, a story that required nationwide coverage and forced television and radio stations to interrupt regular broadcasts for extensive, sustained news coverage that may last for hours or even days. Special graphic overlays and station identification promos can also be used to convey a sense of urgency when the breaking news occurs.
