Streaming news has become an attractive option for consumers. It brings them more choice and offers a customized experience. Unlike broadcast television, which can only deliver one-size-fits-all coverage, streaming can reach viewers wherever they are. This reduces the scarcity in the media equation, which encourages new players to enter.
In the early years of cable TV, cable news one-upped broadcast news. With the arrival of DVRs, viewers could time-shift their programming.
News networks had high hopes for their streaming operations. They invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. Their hope was that audiences would spend more time watching their programs than watching traditional broadcast TV. But as time passed, cable’s adoption rate slowed.
As consumers became frustrated with low-quality, high-cost products, new players entered the market. One of these was CNN. The network employed more journalists than any other U.S. TV news operation.
At the same time, the network was faced with a lack of viewers. Critics of the program argued that the channel failed to reach a broad enough audience. That skepticism overlooked a pent-up demand for alternatives.
Eventually, cable television adopted the streamer. The new outlet was CNN+. It included four-and-a-half-minute ad blocks that featured products such as Liberty Mutual insurance and Humira.
Fox also entered the field. Its Fox Nation streaming app had 1.5 million subscribers.
In 2022, CBS plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news to its streaming customers. While some critics have expressed doubts about the impact of this venture, it has already nichified local coverage.
