Breaking News is a term used by television and radio stations to interrupt current non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled newscasts) for urgent news events. When a breaking news event occurs, the network will usually inform all of its affiliates to stand by for the interruption, and the current program will then stop, often followed by a countdown sequence that will allow affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed at the appropriate time. Historically, breaking news coverage was limited to severe weather alerts or extremely important national events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide, live coverage.
