Trending is a news story that is popular and getting more attention on social media.
Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions for breaking news events were usually reserved for extremely urgent stories such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, in which case many stations nationwide interrupted non-news broadcasts to provide live coverage. This type of news coverage is usually referred to as a “Newsflash,” and the network will typically alert its affiliates that they will be interrupting regular programming. Often, the station’s logo will be overlaid during the report as well. See also News ticker, Special report, and Breaking news.
