During the prime time hour, networks can interrupt their programming to broadcast breaking news. News reports can last for several minutes or for multiple hours. Networks may resume their programming after coverage has ended. The network may also provide an outro promo to direct viewers to the station’s website.
During a breaking news story, the station’s reporter may be at the scene of the incident and may relay additional information as the story unfolds. In some cases, the network will have a live shot of the anchor on the station’s feed. The anchor may also remind viewers that more details will be broadcast on the local station’s evening newscast.
Networks often use an opening graphic that features music to emphasize the urgency of the breaking news story. The opening graphic is typically rolled over after the program has resumed.
Networks usually pause for a few seconds to reset their coverage. They may also integrate their analysis of the story and may have segments not aired. The network may also provide an internal alert service.
At the end of the breaking news coverage, the network may pause to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. This may also allow the station to provide a reverse countdown for the nightly news. When the coverage is over, the network may switch back to their normal newscast.
Most all-news radio stations are owned by CBS Radio and are purposely structured to give the station a sense of attention. They are also careful about relaying news during play-by-play broadcasts of professional and college sports.
