Breaking news is the live interruption of regular non-news television programming for news coverage of an event deemed too important to wait until the next scheduled segment. This type of news report is most often seen on 24-hour news networks. When a breaking news story is broadcast, the network usually sends out a special alert to its affiliates and will pause the national feed for a countdown to allow them to switch over to it. This is commonly known as a “newsflash” or “special report”, although the use of these terms is typically reserved for extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
