A breaking news event is a story that occurs so quickly that it must be reported immediately. Often this means that current non-news programming must be interrupted, but the breaking news can also be reported from the field and transmitted via satellite, phone, or broadband. It is common for the major networks to interrupt their regular scheduled newscasts to report breaking news. When this happens, a newsflash or special report will be overlaid, typically with a distinctive music cue. The newsflash or special report is then accompanied by an anchor who will welcome viewers and introduce the story. The breaking news may then continue for a few minutes, hours, or even days.
