Trending is a live breaking news report that pauses or interrupts regular non-news broadcasts (or in the case of national network newscasts, their normal feed) for an emergency, urgent, or major event. The broadcaster usually alerts their affiliate stations to the break by asking them to stand by for a countdown, and when the time comes, switches to an exclusive graphics package and distinctive music cue. If the story is severe enough, lower thirds or other graphic elements may be altered to convey urgency and to identify the station. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, these reports were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
