Breaking news is a television news report that interrupts non-news programming in order to provide early and immediate coverage of an event. Historically, such cuts-ins have been used for events that require nationwide coverage and necessitate the interruption of regular network or station programming. Examples include the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Challenger explosion, and severe weather, such as hurricanes or tornado warnings. In recent years, networks have begun to use Special Report tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins. When this occurs, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
