Trending is a current news story that’s popular on social media. It is sometimes called a Newflash, Newsbreak or Special Report. During breaking news, a national network will interrupt regularly scheduled programming to air a live report. The network will often provide a countdown to allow local affiliates to switch to the live feed. In the past, this was usually reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required many stations to break into programming. Today, it is more common for 24-hour news networks to interrupt programming at will and carry breaking reports through the use of tickers on a lower third.
